Identity Theft: Fraudulent Use of the CVC

An interesting article pointing out the way crooks use that 3-digit code on the back of your credit card was published in the Newark Advocate Saturday.

The 3-digit code on the back of credit card is called the customer verification code (CVC) requested when making phone purchases, and increasingly often when making online purchases. It is used to help prevent credit card fraud.

This article makes the point that bogus webstores, and crooks on the other end of the phone posing as a legitimate business, will request this 3-digit code along with your credit card number and then, viola, they can now go and use your card number along with the CVC.
