Info Sec and Privacy Pros Need Ongoing Training

I write a lot about the need for a comprehensive and ongoing information security and privacy education program within organizations. Many people do. More is needed. However, something that I don't see written about much is the need for information security and privacy practitioners and leaders to also receive ongoing training covering the issues for which they are responsible. We see a lot of seminars and conferences offered, but it is often hard to get the budget approved to attend these, let alone be able to take 2, 3, 4 or even 5 days away from the office.

There are many more good options available to professionals than ever before for ongoing training that is more time and cost efficient than ever in the past. There are many very good webinars offered. Some excellent offerings come from ComplianceOnline. Here are a few:

* I'm giving one on Tuesday, January 23, "The Anatomy of a Privacy Breach." If you attend, please let me know your feedback; I always look for ways in which I can improve.
* Kevin Beaver has some excellent webinars he also gives on this site.
* If you are looking for some high quality audit webinars, Dan Swanson has some great ones.

Yes, there are many free vendor webinars, and some have some great information, but what they all have in common is very heavy marketing throughout the presentation, or ongoing marketing messages sent to the attendees following the webinar.

The government also occasionally offers some good free webinars paid for by U.S. tax dollars. Check the various sites for the FTC, Dept of Health and Human Services, the SEC and all the others to see announcements for when they will occur. Most also archive their webcasts so you can download whenever you want. For example, you can get past webcasts from the U.S.-CERT site.
