Have You Reviewed the FTC's Proposed Privacy Principles Yet?

If you are responsible for information security or privacy at your organization, and your organization does marketing, here is something you need to know about and discuss with your marketing folks. I blogged about this in December.

I just realized that on February 12 the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced an extension until April 11 for the public comment period on its proposed privacy principles. As a recap, these privacy principles are designed to guide the online advertising industry's practices for the collection and use of consumer personally identifiable information (PII) and other information about their online activities that can reveal information about them.

One of the primary goals of the proposed privacy principles is to address the growing concerns over "behavioral advertising"...tracking consumers' online searches and content viewed to deliver advertising tailored to each individual's interests based upon this accumulated information.

See the FTC's proposed behavioral advertising principles here.

Yes, I have reviewing them and giving feedback on my to-do list! I'm glad they extended the comment date...I dropped the ball and missed the original February 22 date.
